This day school will be composed of four sessions in which I will explore some of the many different aspects of the lute and it’s repertoire. It will include an array of live performances and a collection of instruments to see and try out!
In the first session, I will walk you though the history of the lute. This will include iconographic evidence and an opportunity to see a collection of instruments that chart the development of the lute and to hear the sound world live!
The second of these sessions will be an introduction into the repertoire and notation for the lute.
I hope to unlock the mysteries of interpreting lutetablature and to delve into the fascinating world of surviving manuscripts.
The lute was highly regarded as an instrument of choice to accompany to voice.
In the third of these classes, I will be exploring how the lute was used to tell stories, from the age of the wondering troubadour, to the exquisite art songs of John Dowland and on as a continuo instrument from Monteverdi to Bach.
The final of these sessions, I will be discussing how this ancient and intimate instrument is still thriving in our modern world. I will be exploring modern early music groups, and discussing modern lute repertoire and the strong bond that exists with the classical guitar world. In this class, folks are invited to try out and perform repertoire from the lute world in an open master class.
